An incomplete guide to English-language book-shopping in Sofia

The British Council, which has been active in supporting the Sofia International Film Festival since the latter’s origins in 1993, hosted its gala evening on March 10. The screening of Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire was preceded by a cocktail in Matti’D, which drew members of the British community, people from the world of cinema, and representatives of the British Council and British embassy.

The British Council introduced in early November 2008 a new resource for parents to help their child learn English. Through the online portal LearnEnglish Parents, parents of children who are learning English as a foreign or second language can ask questions, browse topics, learn techniques and download help materials. The British Council has been present in Bulgaria since the 1980s, opening its first official office in the country in 1991.

I rather agree with Sonia.
As an old Brit. Co. hand, having worked several times over many years in Bulgaria, I can only express my dismay at the imminent closure of the library and resources centre. The range of books, magazines, newspapers and the internet access have, ever since the days on Tulovo, proved a cultural oasis, a heaven for those seeking knowledge and information.
I am somewhat dubious about the plan to donate the holdings to another library. From my experience there will not be one that has the open, welcoming ethos of the library on Krakra.

"Dynamic cultural relations" is one thing, a good, well stocked library is quite another; the one should complement the other.
This collection is still "a valuable resource".

Sounds like rather a pity - for a long time the British Council Library was a figurehead for freedom of expression in various European capitals.
I'd like a few BC library books to be sent to provincial libraries in BG.
The BC have tried to do a good job on a tight budget and we all understand that times have changed.
The British Council Bulgaria, should be correctly called the British Council Sofia for all the assistance they gave outside of the capital is worth.
