Ministry of Emergency Situations warns of thunderstorms, heavy rain

Deluge and thunderstorms are expected in most parts of the country, the Ministry of Emergency Situations has said in what could be its last media statement.

"Heavy precipitation is expected over the weekend, accompanied by hail and thunderstorms in some areas. The forecast for July 11 are heavy rains for most of the country, especially in the western parts of Bulgaria and the mountainous regions," the statement said, as quoted by Dnevnik.

The ministry said that precipitation in western Bulgaria was likely to reach five to 25 litres a sq m, where in the central parit of the country it could be as high as 30-40 litres a sq m.

This latest storm warning has come in time of another storm – a hurricane brewing over the ministry itself. Deputy Minister Alexander Filipov has been arrested over the allegations of vote buying ahead of the July 5 general elections.

Meanwhile, Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov, expected to be nominated as Bulgaria's next prime minister next week, has said that one of the first changes that will occur once he assumes office would be to abolish the entire ministry.

No great loss. The title was very accurate. It was able to take any local or regional problem and with poor planning and mis-management make it an Emergency Situation.
