Farewell to Pop Idol Michael Jackson

A fitting memorial service for the King of Pop. Michael Jackson's family and fans bade farewell to their beloved King at a private funeral, which was subsequently followed by a grandiose and emotional memorial service attended by more than 17 500 friends, relatives and devoted fans who made their pilgrimage to the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.

The stage was adorned with Michael Jackson's image, alongside a mural displaying the words: "In Loving Memory. Michael Jackson King of Pop - 1958-2009."

His daughter Paris, 11, made an emotional speech as her emotions almost overcame her, describing him as "the best father you could ever imagine".

Basketball legend, Magic Johnson, who was a personal friend of the Jackson family,  said during the memorial service on stage: "I truly believe Michael made me a better point guard and basketball player."

In an attempt to dismiss any lingering allegations, some stars alluded to the child molestation charges, his eccentric image and other controversial issues which they attributed to envy, jealousy and the misunderstanding of "ungrateful" people.

During the entire memorial at Staples Center in Los Angeles, Michael Jackson's coffin was placed in a central position in front of the stage, adorned by murals.

There was the symbolism which portrayed Jackson as Jesus Christ – persecuted and falsely accused, misunderstood and hated by some. The opening gospel during the ceremony was "one more time we are going to see you".

Celebrities, stars and personal friends such as Lionel Ritchie, Stevie Wonder and Mariah Carey also paid touching tribute, while Jackson's family paid homage to the singer by singing We Are The World and Heal the World.

Mariah Carey performed I'll Be There and ending with the words: "We miss you", wheras Stevie Wonder said "This is a moment I wished I didn't live to see. Michael, I love you."

The King is gone, but his legacy and spirit will live in the hearts of his fans forever. He was a man who brought the world together by his music, a man who broke down racial barriers with his talent and songs. Michael Jackson, rest in peace.
