Barroso congratulates Borissov

European Commission President Jose Barroso.

European Commission President Jose Barroso congratulated GERB leader Boiko Borissov on his party’s victory in Bulgaria’s parliamentary elections and said that the EC would help the country progress so that its citizens felt the benefits of European Union membership, Bulgarian National Television (BNT) said on July 6 2009.

Speaking to journalists in Brussels, Barroso said that Bulgaria was in a "critical phase" of its European reforms and its EU membership.

The EC would do everything in its power to assist Bulgarian citizens feel the benefits of EU membership, BNT reported Barroso as saying.

Among the first items Borissov’s new coalition government will face will be the findings of a report by the EC on Bulgaria’s performance under the Co-operation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) on justice and home affairs.

The CVM was instituted when Bulgaria joined the EU at the beginning of 2007, as a measure to assess and assist the country’s work in overcoming its profound shortcomings in dealing with organised crime and corruption.
