Black PR and campaign statements by ruling coalition partner Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) leader Ahmed Dogan were the main reasons contributing to the National Movement for Stability and Progress (NMSP) poor showing in the parliament elections, deputy party leader Milen Velchev told Bulgarian National Television on July 5.

Dogan's statements, in which he described himself as "the instrument of power" and the single most important factor in deciding which areas got European Union funding, have sparked a war of words in which the message NMSP's non-confrontational message was lost, Velchev said.

"The result is disappointing for NMSP," Velchev said. "Society clearly feels a need for change and it sees the change in GERB."

Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov's Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) is slated to win the most seats in Parliament, with exit polls giving the party about 40 per cent of the vote.
