Roger Federer cemented his reputation as one of the all-time tennis greats with his sixth Wimbledon title and 15th Grand Slam victory in a marathon men's final match on July 5.

Federer will now return to the top of the world rankings ahead of Nadal.

27-year-old Federer and 26-year-old Roddick, who defeated Britain's great hope Andy Murray in the semi-final, battled it out for well over four hours.

If spectators on Centre Court were expecting an easy win by number two seed Federer then they were in for a surprise. Instead, the crowd were treated to one of the most evenly matched men's finals in Wimbledon history. And the fifth and final set will go down as the longest set in any men's Wimbledon final.

The sixth seed, Andy Roddick, took the first set 7-5. Roger Federer then fought back to win the second and third set 7-6 in fiercely contested tie-breaks. Roddick clawed back the fourth set 6-3.

It was 14 games all in the fifth and final set - and perhaps some spectators were beginning to wonder when it was all going to end - when Federer was finally able to break Roddick's serve and end the match.

Celebrities in the crowd included Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, film director Woody Allen, actors Russell Crowe and Ben Stiller, designer Ralph Lauren and even 86-year-old former American secretary of state Henry Kissinger. Former tennis greats Ilie Nastase, Bjorn Borg, Rod Laver, John McEnroe and seven-times Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras were also in attendance.

I know it's all gone a few weeks ago - 'staid up all the night till 4am. Wanted RF to win and he did but Andy, you did not loose either.
As for the Saga, who's the best? Let's just enjoy the moment. Actually I did not, too busy, anxious wanting my Champ to win. what a shame as reading about it now, I think I should have. But there you are some how some us can't help themselves!

You cannot be called the World best simply by just beating Federer for 5 slams final.
IF that is the case, how come all past legends never regard Nadal as THE BEST, THE GREATEST?
We are not even sure if Mr.Rafa can play well into his 30s, injury free and break FedEx 15 slam (maybe more in years to come) record. Let us not forget also both Roger and Rafa are still playing in the Tour and NOT YET retired. Broken records and solid results are proof of Roger's great achievement, even for now, WAY before [...]

Read the full comment his retirement.
The result and outcome is obvious. I rest my case.

Congrats Roger for another classic epic, and Congrats A-Rod too, clearly, there is no loser in yesterday's final, both are winners. As for Mr.Rafa, well, may your poor legs healed and come back. Till then, the talk of FedEx easy win without Nadal is purely ONE dimensional and foolish, to put it mildly.
As Federer says it all beautifully: " I don't care how other people judge me or who is my opponent on the opposite side, the most important is i beat him and win the tournament..."
Nadal's losses in French, and Madrid and the [...]

Read the full comment fact that he NEVER (for now) made it to US Open Final shows there is some catch up to do, WITH or WITHOUT Roger, and it is clearly nothing to do with the 15 Slam winner.
He can jolly well trained more, worked harder, and play as long as Roger injury free to prove the whole world. Till then, we shall respect and acknowledge Roger's achievement, talent, grace, and sportmanship.

picot, did you forget the madrid match? when nadal was directly DEFEATED by roger? how about that?
congrats, roger! you did it! and these sleazy comments can not change the reality that you are the BEST player EVER!
congratulations to andy, as well. he delivered a great performance and enabled a true final! bravo, guys!

Didn't expect such a fierce competitive match today! I think Roddick didn't manage well in the 2nd set tie-break. He could have easily won that set. Well done Roger and good show Roddick! Roger, The world is proud of you today!

What a great match! I'm glad I got up early to watch it! Congrats to Roger - but Andy is right behind - watch out!

I dunno why some people still can't accept a champion's victory... even after today's ferocious combat, where Roger literally had to sweat his way to his 15th, with someone other than Nadal... Roger Federer IS a legend and a tennis icon... and Pistol Pete dint wait for a Roger-wins-Nadal game to say that... and I dont see a reason why anyone else should wait either :)

Federer has won his way past such trivial criticisms!!

Congratulations Roger... From India!

It has nothing to do with Nadal...
Even if Nadal is around facing Federer in his current form... he will be defeated too...

Anonymous Waleed Sun, Jul 05 2009 21:32 CET

Roger is the best, can't wait to see him with more titles.

Anonymous pezaan india Sun, Jul 05 2009 21:05 CET

Anonymous sufiah Sun, Jul 05 2009 21:01 CET

i think federer deserved the win after being saddened by nadal last year but andy roddick is truly awesome in the match. he played very well and i felt sorry for him. he should keep the pace and achieve it next year. federer can return, so do roddick!

Anonymous Picot Sun, Jul 05 2009 20:58 CET

With Nadal out of the way, FedX is sliding SIDEWAYS to glorious history!! FedX won last year's US Open when Nadal was knocked-out early. FedX won this year's French when Nadal beaten early. FedX wins this year's Wimbledon when Nadal drops-out. It's official: FedX the LUCKIEST player in tennis history!!!! Go FedX!!!

Anonymous kondo kha muji haru Sun, Jul 05 2009 20:56 CET
