Turnout in Bulgaria's July 5 2009 national parliamentary elections was more than 46 per cent at 5pm, two hours before polls closed, according to the Central Election Commission.

Before the election, predictions were that turnout would be higher than in Bulgaria's June 2009 elections for the European Parliament, which was about 38 per cent. On July 3, the National Centre for Public Opinion and Analysis said that turnout in the national parliamentary elections would be 55 per cent, while MBMD agency said that it could go as high as 70 per cent.

While voting in the 2009 National Assembly elections is showing an upswing over voting the previous month, it remains to be seen whether it will match turnout in the 2005 parliamentary elections, 55.8 per cent.

Voter turnout in the 2006 presidential elections, in which incumbent President Georgi Purvanov beat Ataka's Volen Siderov in a second round, was 41.21 per cent.
