Bulgaria opens first genome centre on Balkans

Agriculture Minister Valeri Tsvetanov opened the first genome centre on the Balkan peninsula on June 29.

The new centre is at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski and is a public-private partnership between the Agriculture Ministry, the Agricultural College and Sofia University, a government media statement said.

The new centre would provide access to modern equipment and highly qualified staff for Bulgarian scientists and businesses, and allow them to develop new and competitive products for food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, energy and forestry industries, the media statement said.

Even though the centre was opened on June 29, some equipment was still to be installed. By early autumn, the centre was expected to be fully installed and operational.

The total project costs were estimated at 4.1 million leva.
