New kennels poised to be opened in Sofia

A new kennel for stray dogs will be inaugurated on June 30 in Gorni Bogorov. The kennel has a capacity for 400 canines, who currently roam the streets around hospitals, kindergartens and school grounds in the local area, Ekoravnovesie has said, as reported by Dnevnik daily.

Dogs are currently rounded up and treated in the Seslavtsi base, which is also run by Ekoravnovesie. Local municipalities are contemplating the creation of two new kennels by the end of the year, in Mladost and Nadezdha.

According to statistics released from Ekoravnovesie, in 2008 5000 dogs were seized, of which 200 were adopted and 600 killed. The others were castrated, sanitised and returned to the street.

complitely agree with Sick of Dogs! i love dogs and cats. i think that only the first can be dangerous, if they r free in the streets and they have to look for food. they r 2 many. It's 12 years that i travel around EU for business and i've never seen before an EU capital with dogs in the streets as here. i wish the situation can really change.

I know enough folks who have been savaged by street dogs to support getting them off the street. Some will have to be put down. But campaigns for adoption should be wider. I have seen some very lovely animals which would have made fine pets or shepherds, had they only been picked up and offered before they became diseased and anti-social. This is a sad situation.

Protection of animals? Whatever happened to protection of children? Just get the dogs off the streets! No western country would ever allow dogs to roam the streets at will like they do here. The dog situation is just another sign of how far removed Bulgaria is from being European.

I am pretty sure that these new kennels are going to be run just like the isolators are with no spay/neuter programme no legitimate documentation destroying dogs in a manner that does not comply with the NEW protection of animals act jan 2008 .Shelters are needed around bulgaria but need to be managed according to the law also education is a key issue here.
