Sofia City Court ruled on June 27 that Zlatomir Ivanov, also known as Baretata, would not be released, Bulgarian news agency BTA said.

Ivanov's lawyers had appealed for his release, following his registration as a polling station representative for election candidate Ivaylo Drazhev.

Ivanov has been charged with leading an organised crime group for the distribution of drugs and prosecutors are still investigating his alleged involvement in the murders of Georgi Ivanov and Nikova Natsev, as well as the attempted murders of Anton Miltenov, Radoslav Velkov and Dimitar Voutchev.

The court decided not to release Ivanov because the registration of as a polling station representative could still be appealed by the leader of the Group of Bulgarian Patriots, the party that Drazhev was a candidate for.
The party's leader, Yuliy Abadjiev, had said the party did not approve of the appointment.

Earlier in the week, the court had appealed to Drazhev to revoke the registration, which he refused to do.

A day earlier, on June 26, the prosecution had refused to halt the court procedings against Ivanov, saying that a polling station representative does not have immunity from prosecution in serious crimes, as was the case with Ivanov, Bulgarian daily Dnevnik said.
