The Bulgarian Greens and the Socialist Youth organisation were the only political organisations that supported the Rainbow Friendship 2009 parade, organisers said at a media conference on the morning of the parade.

The parade had received the support of 11 foreign embassies, including the US, UK, The Netherlands and France.

Bulgaria's second gay pride parade, due to start at 4.30 on the Lovers' Bridge behind the National Palace of Culture (NDK) on June 27, was to be a parade of friendship, not fear of violance as the year before, Margarita Ilieva, of the local branch of the Helsinki Committee was quoted by Bulgarian news agency BTA as saying.

The parade would end at The Red House with a party, organisers said.

Ilieva held the media responsible for "planting intollerance in society," BTA quoted her as saying.

Along with gay pride parades in other country's, Bulgaria's Rainbow Friendship parade 2009 was to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots.

The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous demonstrations, that started after an early morning raid on June 28 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York City. The riots are considered a defining moment in the gay rights movement and a pre-cursor of the current gay pride parades.
