Wimbledon: Kuznetsova cruises into round three after beating Parmentier

Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia returns the ball to Pauline Parmentier of France during their match at the Wimbledon tennis championships, in London June 25, 2009.

Fifth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova appeared to be in devastating form as he swept past Pauline Parmentier with confidence, crushing the Frenchwoman 6-1, 6-3. With that, the Russian has reached the third round of Wimbledon.

World number 78 Parmentier appeared on course to retaliate immediately after the Russian took the opening set in less than 25 minutes, but could not convert from 0-30 up and Kuznetsova eased to victory.

Kuznetsova broke twice in each set, including the final game. The Russian was quick and furious and made Parmentier run for her money around the court all the time, and her dominance was so thorough that she never faced a break point in the second set before completing her success in less than one hour.

The French Open winner, Kuznetsova is aiming to become the first woman to win two consecutive Grand Slam tournaments in the same season since Serena Williams did it in 2002.

The Russian will now face Germany’s Sabine Lisicki or Patricia Mayr of Austria in the third round.
