Serbia confirms swine flu case, World University Games threatened

A girl cries as she is examined at a mobile clinic in Buenos Aires on June 24. Argentina is reinforcing overwhelmed hospitals as H1N1 deaths rise and flu cases swamp emergency wards

Serbia announced on June 24 that it has officially joined the ranks of the countries affected by the global swine flu pandemic, with the first case confirmed in the country. A man who had recently arrived from Argentina has been identified as a carrier and has been taken to hospital, the Serbian health ministry has said, as quoted by the Associated Press.

Serbian health minister Tomica Milosavljevic said that the 29-year-old man was currently in isolation and that his condition was stable, and that the virus was detected at an early stage.

Croatia has also raised its alert levels as the man stopped via Frankfurt and then Zagreb on his way to Serbia, and reportedly was in contact with "several people" in the Croatian capital.

Meanwhile, Serbian officials have vowed that the thousands of athletes expected to arrive in the country for next month's World University Games will be subjected to thorough examinations and will have to provide certificates proving that they are not affected by the virus, otherwise they will be quarantined and prevented from participating, deputy prime minister Bozidar Djelic has told Serbian media.

The World University Games is an international multi-sport event organised for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation. In this year's edition, participants from 142 countries are expected to descend on the Serbian capital for the games scheduled for July 1-12.
