The H1N1 strain is spreading in the country, with three new cases confirmed by the Bulgarian Health Ministry. The virus was detected in a mother and child who had arrived from the United States on June 13, as well as another child who was in contact with them, Dnevnik daily has reported on June 23.

This makes it the first case where the strain has been successfully transferred from one person to another, in Bulgaria, the report says.

The first symptoms surfaced on June 16, with the infected mother seeking medical consultation immediately. Subsequent tests revealed positive results. Following the revelation, medical authorities have conducted examinations in the towns of Stara Zagora and Pazardjik, where the victims of the flu were in contact with others.

All measures have been implemented by the health ministry and the national emergency pandemic plan to contain the strain and to maintain vigilance and effective surveillance at airports, ensuring that the pandemic will not spread beyond control, the report says.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the European Centre for Infection Containment have been notified of the latest development. Meanwhile the latter have informed of the substantial increase of the virus’ international reach in the last 10 days.
