The Prosecutor-General's Office of Cassation has asked the State Agency for National Security (SANS) to investigate Svetlin Mihailov, chairperson of Sofia City Court (SCC), in connnection with allegations that he had attempted to apply improper pressure on a court panel, Bulgarian-language Dnevnik daily said, quoting a statement by right-wing opposition party Order, Law and Justice on June 20 2009.

SANS will investigate Mihailov, who is standing for a second term as chairperson of the court, on the basis of a tip off from NGO Centre for Psychological Research (SPR).

The tip off was that Mihailov had applied pressure on SCC’s judges dealing with a legal dispute about the ownership of the building of the Bulgarian-American Cultural Centre for People with Disabilities (BACCPD).

The building, which is a monument of culture, has been donated to the BACCPD by the SPR but a private company has also claimed ownership of it.

So far neither SANS nor prosecutors have made any comment on OLJ’s statement which also asked Miahilov to step down from his post.

The BACCOD was inaugurated by former US ambassador John Beyrle in May 2008. Its purpose is to promote and stimulate the artistic abilities of people with disabilities in Bulgaria.
