Didier Drogba gets handed six match European ban

Didier Drogba

The Chelsea striker was punished severely by Uefa for his violent outburst during the semi-final between Chelsea and Barcelona, and his subsequent verbal assault and abuse of the match official. He was given - for his trouble - a four match ban effective immediately and a further two match suspended ban valid for two years.

Chelsea were ruthlessly dispatched in the dying seconds in injury time, bowing out to Barcelona who equalised 1-1, qualified on away goals, and went on to be crowned European Champions in Rome. After the final whistle, however, Didier Drogba vented his frustration on referee Tom Henning Ovrebo. For his partner in crime, Chelsea team-mate Jose Bosingwa, Uefa ruled out a three European games ban, with a further one-match ban also suspended, an official statement in the club's website has said.

Found guilty of verbal abuse and disrespectful conduct, Chelsea received a 85 000 pounds sterling fine from the football governing body.

"Chelsea FC were fined 100 000 euro for improper conduct of their players and the throwing of missiles by their supporters at the match against Barcelona which ended in a 1-1 draw," the statement says.

"Either the club or the players may appeal against the decision within three days of the dispatch of the reasoned decision"

A Chelsea spokesman said: "We've received the Uefa verdict and we'll now take time to assess it in full and consider our response," the BBC has reported.

Inappropriate comment?

The referee in this game was a disgrace. It was evident that UEFA did not want an all English final, and that they were willing to cheat Chelsea to put Barcelona in. UEFA said before the match that they would rather not have two English teams in the final.
