Sofia International Airport traffic decreases

The negative trend at the Sofia International Airport continued throughout May, with reductions in passenger and freight traffic, attributed to the global economic downturn, the airport's press centre said.

In May 2009, the shrinkage was 25 per cent of cargo flights and more than 30 per cent of passenger traffic, as opposed to April, and six per cent less than in the same period in 2008.

Some established lines have indicated a significant increase in ferrying passengers, in particular Easy Jet, which said that in May 2009 they had 66 regular flights, as opposed to 27 flights in May 2008, corresponding to 1.5 times as many passengers.

Air France said they had twice as many flights this year, a 56 per cent increase in passenger traffic. Wizz Air reported a 68 per cent increase in flights and a 76 per cent increase in passengers.

Romanian carrier Tarom doubled its Sofia – Bucharest operation. Bulgarian carriers, Bulgaria Air, Bulgarian Air Charter, BH Air, and Air Via collectively increased traffic by 40 per cent, the airport said.
