Celtic land Tony Mowbay as new boss

Scottish giants Celtic have announced officially on the club's website that Tony Mowbray has been  confirmed as the team's new manager. The deal was finalised on June 16, bringing Mowbay from the relegated from the English Premier League, West Brom Albion.

"Celtic Football Club is delighted today to confirm that Tony Mowbray has been appointed the new Celtic manager. Tony will be joined at Celtic by Mark Venus, Peter Grant  and Neil Lennon in the new Celtic management team," the official statement says.

"This is fantastic news for the club and we look forward to officially unveiling Tony as the new Celtic manager at a news conference at Celtic Park tomorrow (Wednesday, June 17) at 10am" (12 noon Bulgarian time).

The deal that successfully landed the manager in Glasgow, after the departure of Gordan Strachan from Celtic on May 25, reportedly cost the Scottish club two million pounds sterling in compensation demanded by West Brom, which Celtic wired over to the English club over the weekend. However, a Celtic spokesperson has insisted that the 'compensation' amount will not affect the financial pool available to the club for new transfers during the summer.

For Mowbray, this is a return to his old hunting ground, as he was a former player at Celtic in 1991 and 1995. Eventually, he left south of the border where he enjoyed spells at Middlesbrough and Ipswich. With the latter, Mowbay enjoyed his first experience as a coach.

Speaking years after he left Celtic as a player, Tony admitted that he took great pride in the impact of the traditional green Huddle. He said: "I’m delighted to see it still going strong, because it's been a brilliant way of uniting players and fans. It’s in the fabric of Celtic now."

While in England, Mowbay created a tight outfit with West Brom, characterised by a brave attacking style of play and lifted the Championship title in 2007/08 to reach the Premiership. A thrilling FA Cup run was only halted by eventual winners Portsmouth at the semi-final stage. He was voted Manager of the Year that season.

Although relegated, West Brom won plaudits for their bravery, passion, determination and passing style of play but they were unable to avoid relegation back to the Championship.
