‘Moment of truth’ for Croatia – Slovenia border dispute – Rehn

European Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn.

The European Union’s latest attempt to resolve the border dispute between Croatia and Slovenia, which is blocking Croatia’s EU membership process, has failed.

On June 15 2009, at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn held meetings with Croatian foreign minister Gordan Jandrokovic and Slovenian foreign minister Samuel Zbogar, saying before the meeting that it was the "moment of truth".

Rehn indicated that he hoped that the long-standing dispute could be solved before the European Council meeting on June 18 and 19.

But nothing came of the talks, although Jandrokovic said that it had been agreed that talks should continue.

Zbogar said that Rehn’s latest proposal to resolve the dispute included some Slovenian suggestions and would have to be referred back to Slovenia’s government and parliament.

Croatia hopes to complete EU accession talks this year and to join the bloc by 2011, but is making slow progress on negotiating chapters.

Slovenia wants direct access to waters in the northern Adriatic and wants the dispute resolved through EU mediation, while Croatia has said the best way to answer the question would be to refer it to the International Court of Justice.

Inappropriate comment?

To Dr. Duck,
Wouldn't it be detrimental or even odd if the border dispute between the two countries was decided by Germany or France rather than the two parties involved?
