On June 16 in the centre of Sofia, the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) are expecting to amass more than 10 000 demonstrators and members of labour unions, who will descend on Sofia to protest against the "Government's inactivity in tackling the economic crisis".

Demonstrations were scheduled to start at 10.30am on Macedonia Square.

The protesters will demand that the Government should take appropriate measures to combat the economic crisis, including abandoning its decision to freeze budget salaries as well as plans to outlaw future demonstrations near public and Government buildings, Dnevnik daily has reported.

Teachers, doctors, industrial workers, steel workers, farmers, and students are all expected to attend. The protest has been legitimised by the Sofia municipality and the aim is for the Bulgarian Prime Minister, Sergei Stanishev to grant them a hearing at noon.

Around midday, up until 4pm, some streets and boulevards in the centre of Sofia will be fully or partially cordoned off. Dondukov Blvd, Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd, Rakovski Street, Maria Luisa Street, Hristo Botev Blvd, Macedonia Blvd and Aladin Street, Ruski Pametnik (the Russian Cenotaph) will all be affected to some extent.
