Director Mark Nispel has been signed on to helm Nu Image/Millennium's new project called Conan with filming due to take place later this year in Bulgaria and South Africa.

The announcement of the director is at least the first stage in the longstanding attempt to resurrect the barbarian created by Robert E Howard and famously impersonated by current governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, in the 1982 movie Conan the Barbarian.

Nispel made his name in the world of music videos - directing compilations of Cher and Bill Joel - before helming the well-received Friday the 13th and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboots.

Conan will start filming later this year in Bulgaria and South Africa, with Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer - whose credits include Sahara and the upcoming Cowboys and Aliens - penning the screenplay.

But the bigger question of who will actually star in the production is still a mystery.
