Ronaldo certain to leave Man United, but is it that bad?

The never-ending saga about Cristiano Ronaldo's immediate future appears to be nearing an end. Reportedly the striker is certain to leave for a staggering 80 million pounds sterling. The only thing that has temporarily stalled the transfer is a minor hernia injury.

For many diehard Manchester United supporters, Ronaldo is a legend and he will always remain so. However his legacy at old Trafford will never reach cult status quite like that of, for instance, Eric Cantona "King Eric" as he was dubbed by the fans, was a King, like Robbie Fowler is God to the Spion Kop, because he is committed heart and soul to the team. Cantona played a major talismanic role in the revival of Manchester United as a footballing powerhouse and he will always enjoy iconic, demigod status at the club. In 2001, he was voted their player of the century, hence to this day United fans refer to him as "King Eric". One day, he decided he would retire, kissed Old Trafford farewell, and gracefully bowed out.

Albeit a great player and a massive talent however, Ronaldo's achievements will always be marred to an extent by his reluctance to commit wholeheartedly to the club.

Even last year, when United won their 17th title and the European Cup, their triumph and joy was spoilt by the constant speculation that Ronaldo would leave.  It was apparent 12 months ago that he had no desire to defend the shirt of United anymore. So even though his contribution to the club is immense, and the Stratford End will always have a reason to be grateful, it is better to let go a player whose heart is elsewhere.

Surely, a mastermind like Alex Ferguson will find a suitable replacement, especially with a 80 million pounds in his back pocket. That is, provided the money from the transfer are allocated to the manager for transfer purposes, of course.

"I do not require surgery. The hernia is nothing to worry about," Ronaldo said, as quoted by the BBC.

"I learned about the deal here in LA and have heard from my people that Manchester United have accepted. However, I have also been told that Madrid want to have a medical team look at me as expected."

The winger, who has yet to agree personal terms with the club, added: "It's flattering when two of the top teams in the world want you to play for them".

That last remark sums it all up, really.

England and the Premiership will be deprived of one great talent. United fans will find it painful and saddening but they will get over it. After all, no one man is bigger than the club! For Liverpool's Spion Kop and Chelsea's Bridge however, this is Christmas come early.
