Road Agency: Eleven road sections to undergo renovation

The national road infrastructure agency NRIA has announced 11 projects which will be subject to refurbishment and reconstruction. The aforementioned are roads designated as class II and III, and the programme is part of "Bulgaria – Transit Roads V", which was initiated in 2007.

Until now, only eight projects had been authorised with a total value of 161 million euro, and the first tenders were won in the middle of 2008, but none have yet been executed.

The Transit Roads programme's total value is about 705 million euro, of which 380 million were released as loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The project encompasses the rehabilitation of 1517km of roads and the construction of 18km of new roads. The programme has to be completed by December 2010. As the foreign financing in the scheme exceeds 50 per cent, the selection and contract approval process will be done in accordance with EIB conditions.

Second class roads earmarked for an upgrade include the sections between Dupnitsa and Samokov, Velingrad and Yundola, Razlog and Gotse Delchev, Borovan and Knezha, Silistra and Shoumen, among many others. The deadline for those projects to be completed is two years from the date of initiation, whereas the guarantee to participate in the reconstruction amounts to three percent of the total contract.

Potential candidates must purchase the special documentation to allow them to participate in the bidding process, no later than June 7-9, depending on different lots. A compulsory condition is that all potential firms must have access to no less than 1.5 million euro in credit for certain road sections, and no less than 2.5 million for others. Further information is available in the headquarters of NRIA, room 618.
