Rafael Benitez: Hands off Mascherano!

Javier Mascherano was indispensable to Liverpool and no suitor could afford the price of prizing him away from Anfield, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said, answering speculation fuelled by the player's agent that the Argentine could be a target for newly-crowned European Champions Barcelona.

"Mascherano is not for sale at any price," he said on Liverpool's official website.  "Barcelona could not afford to match his value to Liverpool - they can offer 50 million pounds sterling, we don't want to sell."

"Clubs can forget about bidding for him - he has no price and he's happy here."

Meanwhile, Daniel Agger said he was happy to have secured a new Liverpool deal, even though he was not guaranteed a starting spot. Agger, who is 24 and has earlier signed a new five-year deal, was quoted as saying: "First of all, I believe this team, with the players we have, will be able to challenge for many honours and trophies over the next few years."

"Secondly, I think I have a chance to play in this team, otherwise I would not be staying at the club," he told LFC Magazine. "Thirdly, I really like this city, and I like the people who live here. It's not the same as my home town, Copenhagen, but I actually really like where I live. That's important.
