The US will have a new ambassador to Bulgaria after current ambassador Nancy McEldowney was asked by the Obama Administration to return to Washington and assume the position of principal deputy assistant secretary of state in the bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, a US embassy statement said on June 9 2009.

McEldowney is expected to take up her new assignment in early fall, and will remain in Bulgaria until late summer. There will be a Charge d’Affaires at the embassy until the next ambassador is in place the statement said.

McEldowney was confirmed by the US senate for the post of US ambassador to Bulgaria on April 29 2008. She arrived in Sofia in August 2008 to replace John Beyrle, who was posted to Moscow. Prior to her appointment in Bulgaria she spent time in Turkey, where she was deputy chief of mission at the US embassy in Ankara. Before that, she was deputy chief of mission at the US embassy in Azerbaijan.
