Cesaria Evora to perform in Sofia

Cape Verde singer Cesaria Evora performs in Lisbon July 2, 2006. Evora was in Portugal to present her album "Rogamar"

Cesaria Evora will perform in Sofia, at Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture (NDK) on October 2 2009.

The original performer of the song Ausencia from Emir Kosturica's cult Underground film, will delight her fans in Sofia with her trademark melancholic style and bare-foot appearance on stage. Evora won the Grammy in 2003 for the best Ethnic Album. She won acclaim with her release Voz d'Amor, which later was succeeded by Rogamar.

Cesaria Evora  was born in Sao Vicente Island, Cape Verde, on August 27 1941.  Nicknamed the "barefoot diva" for her preference for performing without shoes. Evora is perhaps the best internationally-known practitioner of the morna music and dance style, which is characteristic of Cape Verde.

Lyrics are usually composed in Cape Verdean Creole, and instrumentation often includes cavaquinho, clarinet, accordion, violin, piano, and guitar. Morna is often compared to the blues, although there is little research on the relationship between the genres, though there are interesting similarities and significant cultural connections between Cape Verde and the United States.

Morna is widely considered as the national music of Cape Verde, as is the fado is for Portugal, the tango for Argentina, the rumba for Cuba, etc.

As a dance the morna is a ballroom dance, always danced in pairs. The dancing is made through two body swings to one side in a music’s bar, while in the next bar the swinging is made to the other side.
