Young girl diagnosed with swine flu is healthy

Seven-year-old Magdalena, from Banya village, in Razlog, who was said to have contracted the swine flu virus, has reportedly made a full recovery and is about to be released from hospital on June 8, according to Dr Angel Kunchev, director of epidemic diseases branch in the Health Ministry, as quoted by Dnevnik daily.

The girl's relatives will also be released with her, as they were confined under surveillance and isolation. "All of them are in good health, and are not carriers of the H1N1 strain," said Kunchev.

Meanwhile, nine-year-old Simeon from Sandanski, who was on the plane from the US to Bulgaria with the young girl on May 29, was admitted to the emergency ward of the Blagoevgrad hospital. Reportedly, the boy has not displayed any signs of the H1N1 strain as of yet but will be kept for a while under surveillance to ensure that his condition is satisfactory.

Currently Bulgaria is struck by an ongoing respiratory illness which has similar initial symptoms as the H1N1 strain, but is otherwise unrelated to the swine flu virus. Accordingly, tens of cases are being examined in medical centres on a daily basis, especially for people who have travelled recently to 'risk countries'. This has "put a significant strain on the system", according to Kunchev.
