Bulgaria’s media had doubts about the prospects of Simeon Saxe-Coburg’s National Movement for Stability and Progress, and now exit polls said the party could get two seats in the European Parliament, senior NMSP member Nikolai Vassilev said.

Reacting to exit polls after voting ended in Bulgaria’s European Parliament elections on June 7 2009, Vassilev – who is also Minister of State Administration in the ruling tripartite coalition – said that the votes won by the ticket headed by European Commissioner Meglena Kouneva was "not a bad result".

Polls said that the NMSP should get one seat, possibly two.

Asked to comment on widespread allegations of vote-buying, Vassilev said that it was not yet clear how extensive the problem was, but it was present and a fact.

Vassilev hit out at Bulgaria’s nationalist parties, saying that there was a big difference between the nationalist parties of Bulgaria and those of Western Europe in that such parties in Bulgaria were "very bizarre".

Questioned about reports that Bulgarian expatriates in London had problems voting, Vassilev said this voting abroad was organised by the Foreign Ministry and that he did not think that there had been such problems.
