A further spread of the swine flu H1N1 strain in Bulgaria looks likely with the identification of another suspected case in the southeastern Bulgarian town of Haskovo.

The alarm was raised by the regional inspectorate for public health prevention and control (RIOKOZ), as reported by the Focus news agency.

It involves a male who has been hospitalised and treated in an isolation unit, in the infections and epidemic emergency ward at the Multiprofile hospital in Haskovo. Reportedly, the man is an international lorry driver and had recently returned from four days in Spain.

Bulgaria joined the list of countries affected by the swine flu pandemic on May 27 when the country's first case was confirmed, a young male who flew from New York, via Amsterdam, and arrived at Sofia International Airport on May 27 2009.

The number of Bulgarian patients infected with swine flu could increase in upcoming days, with the ministry investigating a report that an unknown number of Bulgarians had travelled with a German national who had been diagnosed with the virus, the head of Bulgaria's healthcare inspectorate, Tencho Tenev, told reporters.
