Macedonia says it will not revoke recognition of Kosovo

Macedonian minister for local self-government Musa Xhaferi says that there is no possibility that Skopje will withdraw its recognition of Kosovo as independent.

There was tension between Skopje and Pristina in recent days, after Kosovo president Fatmir Sejdiu was reported to have been informally asked not to attend the inauguration of Macedonia’s new president, and then a visit by Sejdiu was cancelled because he would not have been received with full state honours.

Matters were exacerbated by reports in the Kosovo media that a commentator had said that Macedonia might reciprocate for the snub of the cancelled visit by withdrawing its recognition of Kosovo.

On June 3 2009, Janusz Bugajski of the Centre of International and Strategic Research in Washington said that he had been misinterpreted by the Kosovo media and had not said that Macedonia would revoke its recognition of Kosovo.

The same day, Kosovo daily Koha Ditore quoted Xhaferi as saying that he hoped that after conclusion of the demarcation of the Kosovo – Macedonian border, diplomatic ties would be established.

The fact that Kosovo was Macedonia’s main trade partner should not be forgotten. "It is in the interest of both sides to improve relations," Xhaferi said. Relations currently were "good," he said.

Diplomatic relations, Xhaferi said, would be "a plus for our country in the direction of good neighboUrly relations, which is an important criteria for acquiring a date for the negotiations with the EU and visa liberalisation".

The Kosovo Times said that EU ambassador to Macedonia Ervan Fuere also supported the establishment of diplomatic relations between Kosovo and Macedonia.

"We are in favour of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Kosovo and Macedonia involving all issues including the border demarcation," Fuere was quoted as saying.
