Opposition loses if voter turnout is low for EU elections - pollster

Sun, May 31 2009 15:23 CET 767 Views
Latest estimates of voter-turnout for the European Parliament elections in June was around 35 per cent, Bulgarian pollsters MBMD said.

In this case, five parties were expected to send MEPs to Brussels, MBMD said.

Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (abbreviated as GERB in Bulgarian) of Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov was expected to come out as the largest party with five or six representatives, followed by left-wing Coalition for Bulgaria with four or five, Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) with three or four, ultra-nationalists Ataka with one or two and the right-wing opposition's Blue Coalition with only one representative.

If, however, voter-turnout would be lower, opposition parties would lose most. According to MBMD, if voter-turnout would drop to 25 per cent, Ahmed Dogan's MRF could emerge as the leading political force.
