The fundraiser that allegedly raised 17 000 leva for the children of policemen who fell in the line of duty at a birthday party on a day of national mourning, was said to have been a birthday present, Bulgarian daily Gradski said.

Yane Yanev, MP for the Order, Law and Justice party, said in an interview with Bulgarian National Radio that guests at the party had been asked to leave presents in a box at the entrance.

On May 29, a day of national mourning after a bus accident near Yambol in which 16 people lost their lives, senior officials of the Interior Ministry were reportedly seen at a loud party in a restaurant in the centre of Sofia, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Ventsislav Rangelov, head of an arms control unit of the Interior Ministry.

Allegedly, guests included Deputy Interior Minister Roumen Andreev, senior police officials, footbal star Hristo Stoichkov and Serbian pop-folk singer Miroslav Ilic, among others.

A day later, Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev fired Andreev and Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov asked for the resignation of Emil Tanev, general director of the Directorate Public Order and Security at Sofia municipality, for attending the same birthday party.
