The number of victims of the hellish road accident near the town of Yambol in southeastern Bulgaria grew to 16, the Interior Ministry said. Earlier reports said that 15 people have been killed when a bus with a technical malfunction sliced into a throng of tourists at about 9.20am on May 28.

About 20 people were injured, private terrestrial channel bTV said. The bus is a Bulgarian-made Chavdar model and was manufactured more than 30 years ago, bTV said. It was transporting elderly people to the annual fair at the Bakadjik hills area, about 15km east of Yambol, which usually attracts about 2000 people, bTV said.

President Georgi Purvanov headed for the site of the accident. He would also visit the hospital in Yambol where people injured in the crash were admitted.

Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev, who was campaigning in northeastern Bulgaria ahead of next week's European Parliament elections, also headed to the place of the incident together with Health Minister Evgenii Zhelev, the Government's press office said.

Stanishev has asked his administration to prepare a decree declaring May 29 2009 a day of national mourning because of the accident. Aid to the victims' families is also being discussed.

All major political parties said they will put their election campaigns on hold because of the tragedy.

Police and medical officers were still at the place of the crash.

One has to assume that the notion of annual technical checks is either unknown or, at least, not adhered to.
