Manchester United supporter stabbed in Rome

English fans face off with Italian police in 2007 during the Champions League group stage match between United and Roma

A Manchester United supporter was stabbed in Rome on May 27, just hours before the final of the Champions League final kick-off. The latest incident will only strengthen the image of Rome as a Stab City, which it owes to numerous knifing incidents caused by local fans in the past.

One English supporter, aged 54, was stabbed in the thigh in close proximity to his hotel, police officials have said, as quoted by The Guardian newspaper. The wound was not life-threatening and the fan has been treated, the newspaper said.

"We know that a British man was stabbed in the left leg overnight and was later released from hospital" British Embassy spokesman Pierluigi Puglia, has said, as quoted by the BBC.

"We have spoken to two of his friends who contacted us but we are still trying to trace the man himself to check he is well".

In a separate incident, two English fans were arrested for assaulting bystanders in Campo de Fiori, a popular tourist area in the city. Police said they were drunk despite the alcohol ban imposed by authorities in areas including the city centre and near the Stadio Olimpico.
