Eight Bulgarian sailors set to return

Eight of 16 Bulgarian sailors who were captured by Somali pirates on board the Malaspina Castle will return to Bulgaria on May 18, it was revealed by Dragovest Tsvetanov, Foreign Ministry spokesperson, as reported by the Focus agency. The sailors yesterday were en route from Colombo for Istanbul, accompanied by consulate Maxim Blagoev, dispatched from the Foreign Office.

The remaining eight sailors will travel to Singapore first and then return to Bulgaria, said Tsvetanov. According to the Government spokesperson, all 16 sailors are in good health.

The 16 sailors formed part of the crew of Malaspina Castle which was freed on May 9 after the ransom demands were met.

The 32 000-ton Malaspina Castle, a British-owned cargo ship sailing under the Panamanian flag, was attacked on April 6 in the Gulf of Aden. She has a crew of 24, from Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria and the Philippines.
