Manchester United are the Champions of England after a mediocre encounter with Arsenal at Old Trafford which finished 0-0. World Champions, Champions of England and European Champions, Manchester are currently at the top of the football food chain.

The longstanding record of 18 league titles, which was held by Liverpool for so long, has finally been equalled. The years of excruciating patience meant this title will be particularly sweet for every United fan. The parties are just starting; they will be long, and loud and proud.

Liverpool remain England’s most successful football club with 18 league titles and five European cups, but United have a unique chance to reduce that difference should they manage to claim their fourth European crown this year against Barcelona.

This match has left the Red Devils beyond Liverpool's reach with one game left. The Anfield Reds will meet West Bromwich Albion tomorrow, a match which Liverpool must win in order to finish second, which will be their best achievement since the establishment of the Premiership to date.

Dimitar Berbatov has also made history as the first ever Bulgarian to be crowned champion of England. His season at Old Trafford has been controversial at best, but regardless of the statistics, and the critics, he did make a contribution. Just how much of a contribution, that’s for the Manchester United fans to decide. He is their player, and at the end of the day, if they are content with his performance, then that is all that matters.

A season that commenced in a slow and hesitant manner for United became one of the most memorable seasons in their illustrious history. The club is still fighting for the quadruple, which could be completed in Rome.

The match with Arsenal on Saturday, May 16, is not a match that the neutral viewer will remember as particularly dramatic. Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney headed wide as both sides failed to create many chances in the first half.

Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo went close with a second-half free kick and Cesc Fabregas hit the post. The Gunners had come from London determined to spoil the party at Old Trafford and offer Liverpool a lifeline, but it was not going to happen. The silverware had made the trip to Salford, and it would have been a shame to have been all in vain. It was there waiting to be collected, and backed by the Stretford End, with chants of "we shall not, we shall not be moved", United were not going to let this slip. The four Afghanistan veterans were also there eager to get on the pitch and deliver the trophy, and their chance was granted.

United's solid defence, so often the bedrock of their success this year, displayed yet another massive save and ensured one more clean sheet just when Ferguson needed it most. Predictably, at the sound of the final whistle, Old Trafford went absolutely berserk, as the 11th Premier League success was cemented.

So United's third successive Premier League title in the bag, and what a season for Wayne Rooney; Ryan Giggs might have won the PFA player of the year award, but it was the bulldog, never say die spirit of Rooney that epitomised the character of the team this season.

Congratulations!
