Former CSKA Sofia, Barcelona and Bulgaria legend Hristo Stoichkov has been named as the new head coach of the Mashhad-based Abu Moslem club, the Tehran times have reported.

"We negotiated with him in the United Arab Emirates. Stoichkov will lead Abu Moslem in the next season of the Iran Professional League (IPL). We will sign a two-year contract with him and a Bulgarian assistant will help him with the team," Hossein Ghasemi, the team’s president had said.

Reportedly, the Iranian side had also set their sights on former French legend Jean Tigana, but finally opted to secure the services of the Bulgarian.

Hristo Stoichkov is expected to travel to Mashhad next week to sort out the details regarding his future employment in the country.

The former Barcelona had unsuccessful spells as manager of Bulgaria from 2004 to 2007 and while leading Spain’s Celta de Vigo.
In January 2009, Stoichkov had declined an invitation to join the board of the Bulgarian Football Union. Stoichkov received an invitation from BFU president Borislav Mihailov to join the BFU executive board, and he was also offered a vice-president position at the BFU, which the player also rejected.

He is not the first European in Iran. Before him, greater coaches such as Tomislav Ivic, miroslav blazevic, Bora Milotinovic, Arie Haan and Javier Clemente have been in Iran and none of them has ever been complaining about the way people (or government) treated them. I'm sure he too will be received positively by Iranians!

it's all about propaganda. i live in iran, iran is one of the safest and most secure places in the world. there is no war going on here. and crime rate is low. much lower than some european countries. just dont let the media brainwash you. i hope Stoichkov will have a good time here

he will end up punching some local paparazzi half and kick his head in, as he always does, and get himself in tons of shit with the authorities. he may be a legend but was always a hooligan.

Stoichkov could be a great coach! I hope he will not be in danger in Iran.

Stop being so paranoid. Nobody's going to harm Stoitchkov, least of all Iran. Stop believing all that western propaganda you read.

No not Iran! Can someone else find a job for this legend so he won't go to Iran where they might harm him? Hell no Hristo, don't go!
