On May 8 2009 the new section of the Sofia metro will be officially inaugurated. The extension will connect Vassil Levski national stadium in the city's downtown area to Mladost neighbourhood in the south.

Predictions are that around 50 000 people would use the new line that is supposed to ease the otherwise heavy traffic in that area of the city.

Part of the line goes above the ground covered only by a plastic tunnel designed to bring noise levels down. However, private national bTV channel said that residents of Mladost have already complained that the noise was too high.

Sofia mayor Boiko Borissov told bTV that the new line would actually benefit Mladost residents not only by offering them a fast connection to the city centre but by raising property prices in the area. By October 2009 the city hall plans to connect Vassil Levski metro station to Serdika station which is right across Sheraton hotel. That way Sofia will have a direct metro line going all the way from Obelya neighbourhood in the west to Mladost in the south.

The next step is to extend the line to Sofia airport.
