Over the first few days of May alone, around 10 000 tourists visited the tourist sites around the north-western Bulgarian town of  Belogradchik.

It was expected the by the end of the week, the total number of tourists would rearch 50 000, Ani Atanasova, spokesperson for the tourist information centre in the town was quoted by Bulgarian news agency BTA as saying.

This was the highest increase in tourism the town has seen in the past 5 to 6 years, Atanasova said.

Belogradchik, which literally means "small white town," is famous for its rock formations, the Belogradchik Rocks, which cover an area of 90 sq kmand reach up to 200 meters in height.

Other tourism destinations in the region include the Belogradchik fortress and the Magura cave.

There were not enough parking places for cars and hotels in the town were all full.

During the month of April, a total of around 18 000 tourists visitsed the town, with around 5800 visiting the nearby Magura cave.

During the last three days alone, the caves were visited by around 5600 tourists, Atanasova said.
