Manchester United have moved three points closer to lifting their 18th league title and equalling Liverpool’s record after Ryan Giggs’s inspirational performance for his side. The victory means the Red Devils are six-points clear on the top of the table, with Liverpool due to play tomorrow.

In the 22nd minute, Giggs propelled his team into the lead at Riverside, and then Park Ji-sung cemented the win five minutes after the break. The result means that Middlesbrough are still deeply quagmired in the relegation zone. They have three matches left to salvage top tier football for next season.

Unsurprisingly, before the match it was revealed that Alex Ferguson had done some serious reshuffling of his squad, making seven changes from the team that beat Arsenal midweek in the Champions League.

In the visitors' midfield, Giggs was teamed up with Paul Scholes, and Dimitar Berbatov who were entrusted with extracting control from the visitors in the middle of the pitch.

The match was lively and although the hosts never really created serious problems for United, they still managed to create a decent chance in the first half, through Jeremie Aliadiere, who fired his effort wide from 20 yards.

Eventually, from a United corner kick, the ball was planted in the middle of the box, then cleared poorly to Rooney who was lurking in the area and passed the ball forward to Giggs, who rifled in from 22 yards past a stunned Jones.

The second half saw United come out with resurgent drive, and Rooney, who was constantly making himself a menace, wriggled free in the penalty area and then found Italian super-sub Federico Macheda, whose instant shot went just wide off the mark.

There was no stopping the England international, however, as he seemed completely berserk on the pitch.  Rooney, again, stormed into the penalty area, and his reverse pass found Park in acres of space and he fired past Jones into the bottom corner, making it 2-0 for United.

United have taken one more massive stride towards their coveted 18th title. Liverpool will face struggling Newcastle at Anfield tomorrow, 3.30pm Bulgaria time. The Reds are certain to make the lives miserable for the Magpies and the Toon Army, but even if they win, they are quickly running out of time to catch United. Their only hope is for Manchester to slip up against Arsenal, and somewhere else along the way.
