Formula One current leader Jenson Button has expressed his delight with the decision to introduce a budget limit of 40 million pounds sterling from the 2010 season.

The British driver, who currently tops the table with 31 points, followed by Rubens Barrichello with 19 points, and the young German pilot, Sebastian Vettel with 18 points,  said in an interview for the BBC that the idea envisaged by the governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), to shake up F1 's status quo will eventually be seen as a positive move forward for the sport.

"I'm sure that manufacturers and the bigger teams don't want that, but for teams like Brawn we need that for the future," Button told BBC Sport, on April 30.

"It's the way F1 has to go in the times that we're experiencing," he added.

Currently, some F1 teams are shedding as much as 160 million pounds sterling per season, hence the proposed scheme to curtail the budget has triggered fierce controversy from those who back it and from those who fear that F1 is en route to becoming a two-tier sport.

McLaren's Martin Whitmarsh is in favour of a system which "may or may not include a budget cap, but which, ideally, would not encompass a two-tier regulatory framework".

Those who comply with the budget cap will gain greater technical freedom and unlimited out-of-season testing.

David Richards, chairman of Aston Martin and Prodrive, also supports FIA's concept to allow three new teams to enter from next season. Those who enter the competition and comply with the proposed budget cap will be assisted by the commercial rights holder.

"We remain encouraged by the new rules, which have the potential for a team to be commercially viable and competitive on a far more realistic budget," said Richards for the BBC, who is hoping that his Aston Martin team will be featured in F1’s next season edition.
