Flu: Lab tests in Bulgaria will be analysed abroad

Health Minister Evgeni Zhelev says Bulgaria has no way of identifying the new strain of killer flu - known as swine flu - that originated in Mexico. He added that all suspected patients will be placed in quarantine.

Patients' tests will have to be sent to a foreign lab, recommended by the World Health Organisation, in order to test a patient's sample, he said. Zhelev claims that authorities have enough anti-flu medicines to deal with an epidemic. Hospitals and clinics were given strict instructions on what to do in case of a swine flu case, he said.

Meanwhile, the BBC reports that officials in Mexico warned the number of deaths likely to have been caused by swine flu has risen to 159 with more than 1300 patients under observation.

The number of cases globally is rising though no-one outside Mexico has died. Germany has become the latest country to confirm its first case of the virus, in a patient in Bavaria. Spain and the UK earlier confirmed two cases each and six other EU states have been monitoring patients suspected of having the virus.

At 64, the US has the greatest number of confirmed cases outside Mexico. The state of California has declared a state of emergency and president Barack Obama is asking Congress for additional funding to support health services.

Don't worry folks! Bulgaria has
enough cemeteries, right here, so
they don't have to send the victims
in foreign countries... and, who
knows, maybe there is a "state secret lab" in Bulgaria, right? :)

Why cant Bulgaria have their own lab testing facilities for analysing Swine Flu.

"Health Minister Evgeni Zhelev says Bulgaria has no way of identifying the new strain of killer flu".

What is the problem with this EU State? Seriously, the Bulgarian government should not sit there, do something and find a solution. Bulgarian most of the time fail to find solutions. I am sick of Bulgaria. Yes it was the right decision to have it in the EU but I am tired of Bulgaria being the poor performer of the EU. I [...]

Dear Gabriel,
Are you a journalist? or is just a hobby.

1. H1N1 is not originated in Mexico and is not appropriate to confirm that the new strain of "killer flu" was originated there or you have this specific info, and none Knows really where and when did the virus change, Mexico is affected by this problem like no other country of course.
2. Mexico City only is a Megalopolis with nearly 25 000 000(million) people living there.
Can you imagine that??? is 3 times Bulgaria (all country).
