7000 EU nationals eligible to vote in Bulgarian MEP elections

General view of the European Parliament's plenary room

The number of European Union citizens who can vote in Bulgarian elections for members of the European Parliament on June 7 2009 was about 7000, the Central Elections Committee (CEC) said on April 23 2009.

EU nationals must fill in an application form at the office of the municipality where they reside in by April 27 2009. However, a reader on The Sofia Echo forum said that on April 24 2009, three days ahead of the deadline, her municipality lacked the forms. The Sofia Echo reader was told to come on April 27, the last day for filing a form.

Only EU citizens who have lived permanently in the country for the past three months and have permanent residence can vote in Bulgaria.

The form is universal and once filed, deprives the holder's right to vote in any other EU country at the elections.

The CEC also said that Bulgarians living in five EU states have expressed their desire to vote for the respective countries' MEP elections. The countries were Greece, Belgium, Austria, Slovenia and Finland.
