Macedonia to take new steps against economic crisis – reports

Moonlight over Skopje.

The government in Skopje is expected to adopt new measures within two weeks to cushion the effects of the financial and economic crisis, Macedonia’s A1 television channel reported on April 20 2009.

Bulgarian news agency Focus said that A1 reported that Macedonia’s cabinet might discuss the issue at its next meeting, while industry was sinking and businesses wanted a rescue plan.

A1 said that the government’s first attempt at a rescue had failed and, since the start of the crisis, Macedonia had suffered a plunge in industrial production.

In the first three months of 2009, imports dropped by 26 per cent and exports by 44 per cent, A1 said.

News agency Mina said on April 17 that the alliance of economic chambers of Macedonia had sent the deputy prime minister in charge of economy, Zoran Stavreski, a list of proposed steps to assist the economy.

The proposals included a freeze on public sector salaries and other cost-cutting measures.

Macedonian daily Utrinski Vesnik reported on April 15 that local economists had called on the government in Skopje to arrive at a new agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

Meeting on April 14 with prime minister Nikola Gruevski and the Government's economic team, the economists proposed a range of measures in response to the crisis.

Macedonia should reestablish its relations with IMF, basing them on a constructive dialogue, economist Tome Nenovski told reporters after the meeting, Balkan Insight reported.

I think you will find that Alexander the Great has been dead for rather a long time. Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski and her cabinet have the right idea about re-establishing good relations with the IMF (and presumably trying to avoid any re-opening of the Name Issue with the Greeks, who have not always been co-operative on this subject).
