The European Traffic Police Network, TISPOL, has organised a campaign being held throughout the European Union from April 20 to 26 against speeding. Bulgaria’s traffic police are taking part in the campaign, according to an Interior Ministry statement.

"The campaign is designed to reinforce the message across the roads of Europe that speed kills," TISPOL’s website said.

TISPOL’s two previous campaigns were targeted at drivers and passengers who do not use seat belts and safety systems for transporting children and at truck drivers and their observance of regulations.

Every year 42 000 people die in accidents on the roads within the EU, speeding being the reason for 30 per cent of the accidents. In Bulgaria in 2008, speeding was the reason behind 40 per cent of car accidents.

Bulgarian news agency Focus said that on April 19, a 21-year-man died in a vehicle accident in the Pleven area while there were a large number of injuries in various car crashes.

Four people were injured in a car accident between the towns of Aksakovo and Ignatievo, a man aged 57, two women aged 25 and 21 and a three-year-old girl.
