Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber achieved the first ever one-two victory by the Formula One Red Bull team in the third race of the season in Shanghai on April 19 2009.
It was a dramatic race which started with rain pouring on the track and a safety car upfront for the first eight laps. Vettel made the news during the qualifying sessions on April 18 by grabbing pole position and naturally all eyes were on him and his car.
Vettel, known as a driver who likes driving in the rain, made no mistakes and gave Red Bull its first ever Formula One victory. For Vettel it was the second win in his career after he won in Italy last season driving a Toro Rosso car.
The 21-year-old German left no doubt about who was going to win the race. The win put him on the third position in the championship standings.
"I am extremely happy, this is the second time now [I have won] in the wet," he said aftere the race as quoted by the BBC. "The car was fantastic, the team did a really good job in fixing the problems we had and preparing it. "It was the right decision to start behind the safety car." Vettel said. The Red Bull car showed a great improvement from the last two races with Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber coming second.
The leaders in the standings Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, both with Brawn GP, came third and fourth, respectively, in a race where drivers were more concerned in keeping the car on the track rather then making risky overtaking.
"It was crazy out there, there was so much aquaplaning," the BBC quoted Button after the race.
"Every lap I thought I was going to run the car off, especially on the last corner."
Despite the bad conditions, the race ended happily for McLaren whose two drivers Heikki Kovalianen and reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton finished fifth and and sixth, respectively, with a better performing car.
Seventh and eight were Timo Glock with Toyota and Sbeatian Buemi with Toro-Rosso Ferrari.
Former double world champion Fernando Alonso with Renault who started on second position failed to win a point finishing at the disappointing ninth position.
The race was a yet another disappointment for Ferrari with neither of their two drivers succeeding in wining a point.
The next race is scheduled for April 26 2009 in Bahrain.
In the championship standing the leader is Button (21 points) followed by Barrichello (15 points), Vettel (10 points), Glock (10 points) Webber (9.5 points).
