A total of 84 extra trains will be put in operation to meet the higher number of passengers during the Orthodox Easter holidays on April 17-21 2009, Bulgarian state railways BDZ said on April 16.

Thirty-three express trains and 51 fast trains will provide for 7700 extra seats during the holidays, the company said.

Unlike most of the rest of Europe, taking the train continues to be among the cheapest means of transport in Bulgaria. The reason is that the Bulgarian state continues to subsidise the company, which many economist have claimed to be a major drain every year with little prospects of improving.

The only way out of the problem, according to analysts is for the privatisation of the company, which all Bulgarian cabinets have been dismissing as an unacceptable option because it would without doubt result in the laying off of hundreds, if not thousands, of its workers.
