Bulgarian lamb export halted at Greek border

The Orthodox Easter holiday has prompted Greece to import lambs from neighbouring Balkan countries in order to meet the sharp increase of demand in the local market. A shipment of 500 Bulgarian lambs was halted at the border, however, branded as 'illegal'.

Reports indicate that Greece had by April 13 2009 imported more than 15 000 lambs from Macedonia alone.  Further shipments are expected from Macedonia, but according to Greek daily Kathimerini, the lambs from Bulgaria had to be sent back.

On Tuesday, April 14 at the Promahon border crossing, Greek customs authorities stopped the shipment, claiming it lacked proper paperwork and that it represented "an  illegal attempt to transport 500 lambs from Bulgaria".

According to Kathimerini, the lambs lacked proper stamps.

The paper said that more than 30 per cent of the imported lamb sales in Greece over the holiday period  would be processed with different documentation and advertised and sold as "domestic produce".

According to makfax.com, Greek Ethnos daily said that Macedonian, Bulgarian or Romanian lambs are sold on the Greek market at 10 euro per kg, whilst wholesale meat traders purchase the animals for  1,5 to 2 euros a kilogram, generating a 400 per cent profit on the deal.
