Varna Municipality  is to apply for financial assistance under the European Union's environment operational programme to clean up the beach-head and keep the beach from future contamination.

The documentation submitted by the municipality covers the financing of two projects, a new extensive drainage system as well as the construction of a canal which will divert rain water from the Shokiorovia and Vulnolo canals.

The projects will cost a total of eight million leva and were drawn up by Sofia-based  firm, Bodokonsult Engineering, according to municipal official Stoyan Dimitrov.

Construction envisages the building of special barriers to prevent solid waste seeping into the sea, as well as the installation of a new pumping purification stations. The contaminated water, according to the blueprint,  is to to be released two km offshore  which, according to Dimitrov, "will prevent the polluted water reaching and spilling onto and the beaches".

"This technology will guarantee that no pollution will reach the Varna beaches, especially in those zones which are currently the most contaminated and in dire need of a clean up," he said. The report does not explain, however, what will stop the contaminated water from heading toward the beach again, once it has been released 2km offshore.

Varna Municipality has formulated two additional projects, the creation of a new water and sewerage draining network in Vinitsa and Galata, worth 7.2 million leva. The municipality has already applied for European funding for the construction of the Varna water treatment station, which will expect about 48 million leva in funding.
