In 2008 Bulgarians consumed 5.9 litres of wine per capita, Bulgarian news agency BTA quoted the Government press office as saying on April 9 2009. The country's population is less than eight million, according to census figures of a few years ago.

Bulgaria produced a total of 138 979 915 litres of wine in 2008, three per cent higher than 2007.

Exports, which accounts for 80 per cent of all wine produced in the country, registered a slight decline in 2008. In the first 11 months of the year, Bulgaria exported 91 003 244 litres

The reason for the decline was the drop in exports to Russia, traditionally a strong market for Bulgarian wine. Other markets for Bulgarian wine were Poland and Germany.

The volume of wine imported in the first 11 months in 2008 was 7 343 627 litres.

To cope with the challenges in Bulgarian wine-making, the state launched a national programme for assistance of the wine industry for 2009-2014.

The launch was announced in February 2009 as a joint effort by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the State Fund Agriculture. The programme aims to support Bulgarian vine-growers with a subsidy of up to 8040 leva a hectare, which ideally should cover up to 75 per cent of production costs.
